Wine Country in Michigan? Yes Please!

Calling all wine lovers!

When you think of visiting wine country or touring vineyards, you may not think to include Michigan on your list- You should!  Michigan is home to over 125 wineries statewide.  Many of which continue to impress by receiving high accolades at both national and international competitions.  Michigan winemakers are best known for their white wines, sweeter reds, and their dessert wines. This in part has to do with Michigan’s weather.

The most popular areas to wine taste and enjoy the beauty that Michigan vineyards have to offer are in the Leelanau and Old Mission Peninsulas located in northern Michigan near Traverse City. This area has become a go-to place for wine lovers in the midwest. There is something for every type of traveler- from the crisp winter days, to the smell of spring flowers, to the summer sun, and the fall colors, this area has it all! Whether it is a romantic getaway, a girl’s weekend (perfect for bachelorette parties), a family reunion, or just a quick stop to view the beautiful vineyards and relax with a glass of an award winning Late Harvest Riesling, don’t miss this area when traveling in Michigan!

Most wineries are open year-round and offer monthly events. Before traveling, as always, it is best to plan your trip. Check hours of operation, tasting room hours, menu options, and if they offer facility or vine yards tours which are both fun and educational. Most wineries charge a nominal fee to taste. Many travelers choose a single peninsula route each day because there is just too much to see and taste in just one day.

If you do not want to drive the peninsulas because you want to sit back and enjoy the view and take part in the tastings, there are many wine tours available. They cater to large groups, small groups, and individuals. I have used www.wineandbeertours.com had such a great experience. They will pick you up and drop you off within the Traverse City area and will design a tour that works for the group. If you are interested in more information or would like to book a tour  please check out the website listed above.

Although northern Michigan may be the most popular area for wineries in this “Great Lake State”, there are several other wineries statewide worth visiting as well.
